How it Began
After
initially buying 2 young boys as pets, the usual story applies. Next
came the purchase of a pregnant female alpaca
with a female cria at foot, then
another of the same, Births and subsequent matings have caused
the usual growth until we now find ourselves with a
total of 24
alpacas.
It was our goal to first increase the size of our herd, and then to
start improving the quality of our alpacas. Having
now achieved the
first goal, we have recently purchased 2 new Male Alpacas to
take us to the
next step and a number of our girls are now pregnant to these
boys. |
About Us
Paierau
Alpaca Stud was started in 2002 by Bruce and Enid Kirk.
The property is
situated on the outskirts of Masterton in
the North Island of New
Zealand.
With only 5 acres, (2.6 hectares), the stud operates with a minimum
number of alpacas. We concentrate on improving the animals and their
fibre by selective breeding. |

ALPACAS
IN NEW ZEALAND
Although
there are about 15000 Alpaca in New Zealand, in 2002 when we first
commenced operation, there were only a few breeders
operating, and the
pet market
was just starting to grow. Not only that, in the ensuing period
we have seen a huge leap in the quality of alpacas now being
bred.
With
a number of Breeders importing animals
from Australia, and the
introduction of Embryo Transfer techniques, the alpacas
and their fleeces
have improved out of all sight. With the
proliferation of
Alpacas, many A&P shows now include Alpaca sections and
this is
helping the animals and the industry become more mainstream. |
